Sharm el-Sheikh is a city situated on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, in South Sinai Governorate,Egypt, on the coastal strip along the Red Sea.
Its population is approximately 35,000 (2008). Sharm el-Sheikh is the administrative hub of Egypt's South Sinai Governorate which includes the smaller coastal towns of Dahab and Nuweiba as well as the mountainous interior, Saint Catherine's Monastery and Mount Sinai.
Sharm el-Sheikh ("Bay of the Sheikh" in Arabic) is sometimes called the "City of Peace", referring to the large number of international peace conferences that have been held there. It was known as Şarm-üş Şeyh during Ottoman rule and was known as Ofira during Israeli occupation between 1967 and 1982. Among Egyptians and Israelis, the name of the city is commonly shortened to "Sharm"
Watersports Sharm El Sheikh is a watersports' Mecca. You name it, this place has it. Scuba diving is the biggest business, but you can also try your hand at waterskiing, kite surfing and windsurfing. Discover The Valley of the Camels, AKA Wadi Gimal National Park, spreads out for 6,000 square metres and is made up of wide open desertscapes, mangroves and acacia trees. Bedouins still live off the land here, so you’ll get the chance to meet them and maybe even try their home-made camel cheese.
